Recycling Centers & Tips

Hilton Head Island, SC

Recycling is a responsible way that individuals can help out the environment, preserve our natural resources and reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfills. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 75 percent of the waste we produce is actually recyclable. The materials accepted by recycling centers vary by region so be sure to check locally for specific details about what's allowed.

When it comes to recycling, remember the 3 R's: reduce, re-use and then recycle. You should always look first at reducing your consumption and make an effort to produce less waste. Then you can address re-use by thinking creatively about how you can reinvent something to give it a new purpose rather than throwing it out.

Start recycling at home by separating the waste your family produces into the following five groups:

1. Glass
2. Paper and cardboard
3. Aluminum and other metals
4. Organic waste
5. Everything else.

Most plastics are labeled with one of seven codes that indicate the type of material they are made from. The most common types of plastics accepted at recycling centers are #1-PET and #2-HDPE. Whenever possible, try to purchase products made of or packaged in plastic containers that feature these two codes so you can recycle them at a later date.

Used motor oils, old tires, antifreeze, spent batteries, paint, pesticides, and old electronics should be disposed of in an environmentally conscientious manner. Never discard these potentially dangerous pollutants in your household trash or pour liquid residues into drains; take them to a recycling center or have them picked up by a responsible handler!
