Eco-Friendly Alternate Transportation

Bluffton, SC

In the era of rising gas prices and limited places to park personal vehicles, many people are looking for alternative transportation methods to get from one place to another. From bicycling to public transportation there is a multitude of ways available that may be easier on your wallet and the environment.

The Lowcountry Regional Transportation Authority, operating as the Palmetto Breeze, offers commuter bus service back and forth from Hilton Head Island to Beaufort, Jasper, Allendale, Hampton and Colleton counties, each Monday through Friday except for holidays. Fares vary from $1 (local route) to $12 (for demand response). These luxurious coaches are comfortably air-conditioned and offer audio and video entertainment for enjoyment while riding. ADA-accessible transportation is available by appointment! Palmetto Breeze buses do not go to Savannah.

Lowcountry Adventures provides door-to-door airport transportation service in the area from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport by reservation, but also offers scenic bus tours of Hilton Head Island.

So many of us don't think twice about jumping in the car for a short drive to the local grocer or to visit a neighbor, but why not opt for a bicycle instead? Biking not only reduces the impact of your individual carbon footprint, it is a wonderful low-impact aerobic workout that rewards you with a cardiovascular fitness solution that strengthens your heart, reduces blood fat levels and improves blood circulation. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends that all of us get 30 minutes of bike riding in every other day at a minimum to improve our heart function. Jump on two wheels and work on a little stress reduction, which can lead to lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol! Consider grabbing your bike the next time you have to go a few miles and go for an easy ride that helps you and our environment.

One of the best ways to travel a small distance while benefiting your body and having no residual harmful impact on our environment is to take a walk! Have we forgotten that there was once a time when people had to rely on their own two legs to get from one place to another? A little clean air and sunlight will do a body good and it's been proven that vitamin D generated from daily exposure to just 15 minutes of sunlight can help prevent breast cancer, prostate cancer and osteoporosis. Walking is a great cardiovascular activity and provides you with an opportunity to slow down and take in the scenery.

So much in today's world is about instant gratification and we could all stand to take things at a more relaxed pace from time to time. You know the old saying "stop to smell the flowers." Well, you can't do that very easily while you're behind the wheel worrying about getting to your next destination.
